Odds & Ends: API Improvements

This week I am writing about some small changes we have made to our API’s in the past few weeks. At Delve we believe in continuously improving our product -sometimes that means releasing bite-size features that nonetheless make our products more useful to our customers.

For instance, when a publisher uploads a video to our platform, the video is assigned a media ID which can then be used via the Content API to uniquely identify the video. Many of our customers, however, have large libraries of videos that already have unique ID’s assigned to those videos.

For these customers maintaining an association between the existing unique ID and the new unique ID the Delve platform assigns to each video is critical. That is why we just released an improvement to our API that lets a customer associate an existing unique ID to a video in our platform by using a special metadata property called “Reference ID” (See screenshot of the UI on this post). The “Reference ID” is a special custom property (unlike other custom video properties which we also support) because the value of this property can also be modified and viewed from our console UI.

In addition to the Reference ID property, publishers can now access the “Upload Date” and “Publish Date” properties via the Content API.

But wait, there is more! We have added more examples and sample code to our API documentation to make it easier for publishers to create rich websites. The Player API can be found here. The Content API and Analytics API documentation can be found here and here, respectively.

Akamai announces HD Network that Delivers Large Scale HD Online Video

Akamai announced today they are unveiling the Akamai HD Network, an HD quality video delivery network that can scale to broadcast size audiences. Delve already collaborates with Akamai to deliver an end-to-end online video platform solution that is second to none. For instance, as a result of that collaboration we recently announced our support for Dynamic Streaming through our use of Adobe Flash Media Server 3.5 on Akamai’s network. Today’s announcement reinforces our belief that Akamai and Delve make a powerful combination. We are very excited about this announcement and we will continue to leverage our collaboration to pair Akamai’s “next generation video delivery offering” with our own next generation video platform.

Creating Your Own Branded Player Just Got Easier…and Faster

It seems that speed is in the air in the software world. Apple just released Snow Leopard which is faster and has lots of enhancements. Microsoft is about to release Windows 7 which is also faster and has lots of enhancements to Vista. We at Delve are also on a speed and small enhancements fix that we hope will make you smile and say “oh that’s nice”.

This week we updated the “Player Builder” -which allows you to easily create your own branded players- making it faster and more responsive when you are editing players. You will now spend a lot less time looking at the “Updating” progress bar.

We also introduced an “Undo” and “Redo” feature. Now you can unleash your creativity without worry! If that neon green color doesn’t look as good as it did in your head you can undo the changes with a click of a button.

There are also small improvements in the UI that improve the user experience. For instance, when you copy an embed code to memory we provide feedback that the operation was successful by displaying a “Copied” message on the screen. We’ve also added many more “tooltips” that help you understand the functionality of an icon, button or field in the context of using the application -no need to stop working to read documentation or FAQ’s.

Delve Networks Online Video Platform Just Got Easier to Use

Here at Delve Networks we always strive to make our products easy to use. While our customers tell us they love our user interface, from time to time we also get the feedback that some tasks are initially a little hard to figure out without some help. If you are like me, you don’t like to read documentation or request help -you just want to get down to business immediately.

That is why on our latest release, when a new customer logs in to our console for the first time, they will be greeted with helpful hints that walk you through the process of publishing your videos to a website. If that is not enough, a HELP link is now more prominently displayed throughout the application.

Of course, if you still need a little more hand holding, our support staff is only a phone call or email away. But we have now given you one more reason not to talk to us -we’ll take that as a compliment.
