i want to be able to search for mentions of “philly” to see who is talking about the city of brotherly love.

  2. Posted 5 Dec 2006 at 2:56 pm | Permalink

I mentioned this feature on my blog nearly two months ago. Nice to see I am beating the official announcement.

What would be nice is to have the player embeddable in my own page with the search terms already highlighted (via parameters or whatever).

This would give you greater exposure but also would lead people back to your site to search the same entry for some other terms. To me, this is a win-win strategy.

Congrats. You guys rock and totally deserve it.

If you’re able to detect “hot” or not areas of video for textual contents in a non-text format, does that mean the algorithm is essentially doing speech-to-text on demand? If so, in addition to the heat map of the file, wouldn’t it make sense to display in a box above or below the heat map the machine’s working translation for that region, so that you can scan it just as quickly as if it were text?

Do you guys host these clips only on your site or can this search youtube videos, etc? That would be a killer app…might be something I used regularly.

Pluggd’s search ability’s are light years ahead of the game. I have no doubt that even when google releases theirs it won’t compare to what you guys have here. I never really listened to podcasts before it. I’ll admit I still don’t listen to as many as I would like, but when I do, I listen to them on Pluggd because I find what I’m interested in.

Keep up the good work yo!

I’ve used pluggd a few times before with their amazing search capabilities for audio. I have to say I’m pretty stoked to see this for video.
I guess this would help lead pluggd to being the google of audio and video. Sounds killer!

I can’t wait to see what you guys do with video. Your approach seems like it will save tons of time for both the casual viewer and hopefully for the vlogger/journalist as well looking to get right to the clip they need for cutting and remixing.

Thanks for the comments everyone, we appreciate your thoughts and feedback.

Chris P. – We are really focused on the user experience as far as content goes online. As we get people using our technology, we’re going to be open to feedback based on their experiences. I definitely will ask you to come back for that and will want to follow up with you soon thereafter.

Evan – We’re not hosting any content, what we’re doing is showing you a chunk that may interest you based on what you search on.

Clint, Schmidt, and Adam, thanks for the comments. Keep a look out for some more stuff soon!

The idea that this will keep users from “bailing out” of a video is very interesting…it also has significant relevance to advertising companies. Does Pluggd have any plans to work with ad companies to put relevant ads next to relevant chunks? I like the idea on a purely innovative basis, but it also has scary possibilities.

Regardless, really excited to seeing the data and eventually seeing Pluggd in action!

It does make more sense. I do agree with the above, pairing ads with chunks. Makes $en$e.

Evan, Clearly advertising works a whole lot better when it’s targeted to context. But if you can’t keep the user around to view that context it doesn’t matter where you place the ad. We believe the big opportunity is combining contextual targeting with better user engagement models like chunking. More to come on this!

This is exactly the type of direction more people need to be thinking about. When Google and other search engines can somehow reach into the chunks so that when I’m searching I can jump right to the spot in an audio or video file then you have something great.

This whole chunking excites me. So much potential on so many different angles.

Interacting with content, especially when there’s a focus on creating high quality content in the first place, is key in regards to providing value for users and advertisers alike. I’m very excited to see folks in the industry get how important folks like Pluggd are in regards to monetizing online collateral effectively in the present and future versus models that don’t apply from the past.

I agree that video is the most engaging form of online media today, and it only looks like it is set to get bigger. It seems though, that the concept of using social networking and video for businesses to increase engagement and enhance communication, both externally and internally, has not really reached its full potential.

Given the fact that social networking sites are one of the most visited and popular sites on the internet, it is surely only logical that big brands and corporations should use this to their advantage and create their own ones? Web 2.0 technologies should be used not only for video solutions but to ultimately bring a website alive, encompassing other features such as blogs, forums, RSS and teams. As you rightly said, this remains to be seen if Brightcove have “radically changed” what they have to offer and in the meantime, alternatives are available!

    Posted 28 Jul 2008 at 11:45 pm | Permalink

I also agree with Gary, video is very exciting. I think in the next few years people will discover that video is appropriate for certain areas of the consumer market, right now it seems like everyone wants to use video for everything. I think the small business arena will benefit the most from video which is pretty much the thesis behind Jippidy.com

  23. Posted 30 Jul 2008 at 9:35 am | Permalink

Social networking services are definitely going to be big within the business community. Corporate social platforms are useful for many reasons and will dramatically enhance internal and external communications between staff and customers.
Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis, forums, video blogs ans RSS create an interactive and social environment and should increase staff productivity which in turn will drive sales.
A more engaged workforce will ultimately produce better results in which employees should also get a stronger sense of a brands ideologies and increase brand allegiance.
Given these facts corporations should seriously consider shifting communications towards social platforms.

Hi Alex. I am writing to point out a factual error in the quote from NewTeeVee. Microsoft did work with a leading video encoding provider on this technology, but it wasn’t DR, rather it was Inlet Technologies (where I work). Inlet co-developed Dynamic Complexity Balancing with Microsoft in late 2006 as part of a joint program lead by Inlet’s CTO Scott Labrozzi and the now-defunct Digital Media Division of Microsoft. It’s great to see that outlets like NewTeeVee are talking about the hard work that Inlet has been doing over the past 5 years to improve video encoding. As an FYI, Inlet’s Spinnaker live encoding product line has shipped with this capability since NAB 2007.

    Good morning mr. Castro,
A few days ago I was in contact with mr. Levant to evaluate a solution for the problems that we have with Brightcove because of the shut down of their small account (we are a little christian webTV).
After the first email, I have not had more news and unfortunately Brightcove deadline will arrive soon.
We really need an assessment from Delve.
If it is useful I can still send an email with all the technical specifications of our needs and a brief description of what we do.

I look forward to hearing from you.
    Best,

Will YouTube stay the major entry point?

Or will Google Video Search be the new entry point to thousands of hosts?

“We don’t have a single website will all the images in the world”

    Yes, that’s obviously true.
But if you want your images to get noticed (as a photographer, for example) you’d better be on Flickr.

Social platforms like YouTube and Flickr offer a lot of advantages.

And, sadly, we don’t know (or care to learn collectively) how to build decentralized social platforms.

(and so, no, Facebook is not the solution ‘against’ YouTube)

“I strongly doubt that all of mankind’s video will be hosted on a single site for the rest of mankind’s existence.”

Who would have thought that just 3 companies (Microsoft, Yahoo, Google) would host hundreds of millions of personal and professional emails?

An enormous share of all emails of mankind, just 3 companies.

It’s totally against the original intent of the emailing system — but it’s a reality.

And anyway, YouTube is not a walled garden in the AOL sense.

    YouTube has an open API.
YouTube is accessible from anywhere (save for govs censorship) and anybody can use it.

It’s not what AOL was. At all.

The analogy with AOL is misleading us into believing that history will repeat again.

    It will probably not.

Please, understand that I’m all for a non-centralized web. We surely need more web video platforms, with more options and more use-cases.

And Delve Networks is, I’m sure, trying to offer exactly that.

But we must not fool ourselves: centralized content platforms won’t just go away like that.
